Custom Molder’s Strategic Edge: Top-Class Metrology Services: Plastics Technology

Molding good parts is not enough. Better and faster metrology services for tool qualification and process validation make the difference for Octex Group. Octex is more than a molder. The Octex Group in Sarasota, Fla., comprises three companies: Octex custom injection molding division, which has a growing emphasis on value-added secondary operations like decorating and assembly; Choice Tool & Mold, the moldmaking arm; and Omnia Scientific, the metrology business. The latter two units serve primarily outside customers. Omnia, one of the faster-growing parts of the Group, has become a major focus in differentiating Octex from its competitors.   Metrology services dedicated to plastics injection molding is an important factor differentiating Octex from its competition. Nowadays, Octex Group pursues mainly medical business, which accounts for 65-70% of its revenue. The remainder is a mix of high-end electronics, aerospace/defense R&D projects, and some consumer and industrial jobs. (For an overall company profile, see Feb. ’18 On-Site feature.) The Octex molding business and Omnia Scientific occupy a 70,000-ft2 main building, with Choice Tool & Mold housed in 10,000-ft2 n...

Sunburn — The morning read of what’s hot in Florida politics — 2.7.20

Could the race to lead the Republican Party of Florida into 2022 already be heating up? Sources from Tallahassee to Lehigh Acres say Matt Caldwell wants the title of state chair and will challenge sitting Chair Joe Gruters to get it. According to more than one Florida GOP executive committee member, all of whom asked to remain anonymous, Caldwell has been making phone calls to exec. committee members and not so subtlety telling them he will challenge Gruters if the Sarasota Republican runs for re-election as party chair. And, according to our sources, Caldwell has also suggested that if President Donald Trump loses Florida, it will be because of the RPOF. Plenty took notice when the former lawmaker announced his candidacy for Lee County Property Appraiser AND Republican state committeeman by trashing the state party. He continues to toss aside questions — with dismissals that sound a lot like he’s running. “I am focused on running for state committeeman,” he said Thursday night, “and I’m interested in making sure the party is ready to be victorious in 2022.” Wait, when? Because Gruters said he’s “100% laser-focused on getting our President reelected.” And Donald Trump will appea...

Ultima has been making ludicrously fast track-focused supercars for over two decades but this latest one

Ultima has been making ludicrously fast track-focused supercars for over two decades but this latest one called the RS is the one for the ages. With as much as 1,200 horsepower from a supercharged Chevy-sourced LT5 V-8 and a dry weight of little over 2,000 pounds, the Ultima RS channels everything that was great about Group C prototypes in a package that you can take down to the shops. The British are famous for building some of their best cars in sheds. Take Morgan, for instance. Or the Lotus 7-inspired Caterham. Ultima is yet another worthy example and, just like Caterham, you can assemble your Ultima in your very own garage if you so desire, all for the price of a “mundane BMW M3,” according to the company. Not bad for something that would thrash just about anything at your local track day, right? You may think we’re merely listing the elements that make up last year’s Le Mans winner but, in fact, the Ultima RS, a British pocket-sized supercar shares all those features with Toyota’s prodigious TS050 prototype and, unlike the Toyota, the Ultima can be driven on the road – including Stateside! With revised aerodynamics, huge wheels, and LED light clusters at ...

With the stated intent of combating illegal immigration, Senators Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) and Lindsey Graham

With the stated intent of combating illegal immigration, Senators Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) and Lindsey Graham (R., S.C.) are crafting new legislation to institute a national identification card. The card would be required in order to be eligible for employment, and would in turn enable employers to identify and reject illegal immigrants who are seeking work. The card would be biometric, i.e., containing identifying characteristics unique to the physiology of the cardholder. In this case the biometrics would most likely be comprised of either a fingerprint or a scan of the veins on the back of the hand. This is not the first time a biometric card has been proposed: in the wake of 9-11, there was a strong push for a national ID card on the basis of national security. Schumer and Graham claim that the institution of a national ID would not be accompanied by the creation of a complementary database; however, no national identification system has ever operated independently of a database. It would be impossible to run a national ID system without a corresponding database available for purposes of verification. Thus, although the card would initially include only biometric and citize...

Many things about “adulting” are difficult. Bills. Taxes. Figuring out what kind of job makes you

Many things about “adulting” are difficult. Bills. Taxes. Figuring out what kind of job makes you happy. Finding a place to live. But there’s also an unspoken challenge, one that usually emerges after college and only becomes harder as we age: making friends. The first 20 years of our lives are designed to build friendships. We spend most of our time in school, around people our age who have similar interests and backgrounds. But as we enter adulthood, those friendships tend to fade. We move to different cities, get married, have children. We dedicate more time to work and responsibilities, and less to building social connections. By the time the average American turns 40, they spend more time with friends they met through their children than those they met at school. It’s not just the quality of friendships that change, but also their quantity. As Quartz’s Dan Kopf and Corinne Purtill have written, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics’ American Time Use Survey shows that, as they grow older, Americans spend less time with friends and more time alone. In their early 20s, the average American spends more than two hours of their day with friends; by the time they turn 40, it’s less t...

How ultra-processed food took over your shopping basket | Food

It’s cheap, attractive and convenient, and we eat it every day – it’s difficult not to. But is ultra-processed food making us ill and driving the global obesity crisis? Nearly three decades ago, when I was an overweight teenager, I sometimes ate six pieces of sliced white toast in a row, each one slathered in butter or jam. I remember the spongy texture of the bread as I took it from its plastic bag. No matter how much of this supermarket toast I ate, I hardly felt sated. It was like eating without really eating. Other days, I would buy a box of Crunchy Nut Cornflakes or a tube of Pringles: sour cream and onion flavour stackable snack chips, which were an exciting novelty at the time, having only arrived in the UK in 1991. Although the carton was big enough to feed a crowd, I could demolish most of it by myself in a sitting. Each chip, with its salty and powdery sour cream coating, sent me back for another one. I loved the way the chips – curved like roof tiles – would dissolve slightly on my tongue. After one of these binges – because that is what they were – I would speak to myself with self-loathing. “What is wrong with you?” I would say to the tear-stained face in the mirror...

Study finds parking available in downtown Astoria | Local News

Considerable cloudiness. Occasional rain showers after midnight. Low 39F. Winds SSW at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 40%.. Considerable cloudiness. Occasional rain showers after midnight. Low 39F. Winds SSW at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 40%. Some swear off shopping or dining because of it, while others consider Astoria spoiled compared to cities where people pay to park several blocks from their destination. But a parking study and survey by the Astoria Downtown Historic District Association has concluded that, aside from some small pockets and specific times, finding parking is fairly easy. Sarah Lu Heath, the executive director of the downtown association, presented the findings to the City Council on Tuesday. “To stand up and say this isn’t a problem gives me pause,” she said. “However, for the last 3 1/2 years, I’ve been downtown six days a week, 50 weeks a year, and once in 2017, at the starting time of the high boat parade during the Regatta, I could not find a parking spot.” The study found small pockets of constrained parking between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. — peak restaurant hours — in a few blocks throughout the downtown core and around the Garden of Surging ...
