FABTECH 2019 breaks attendance record again Canadian Metalworking Canadian Fabricating and Welding

Despite the weather, FABTECH 2019 broke records, with nearly 49,000 people walking the halls of Chicago’s McCormick Place. Early November weather wasn’t kind to Chicagoans, who endured snow, sleet, and single-digit temperatures. The mess arrived Nov. 11, just in time for FABTECH®, North America’s largest industry event, which began just as the flight cancellations that day mounted. Would the weather, combined with news of a softening global economy, keep people away? Not at all. Despite the weather, the 2019 event closed with record attendance of 48,278 attendees, a 7 per cent increase over the previous Chicago FABTECH two years ago. What exactly drew so many through the cold, snow, and economic uncertainty? Gregg Simpson, owner of Ohio Laser, a custom fabricator near Columbus, Ohio, summed it up this way: “People are here, and they’re interested in buying. Everyone I’ve spoken to all week says the same thing. ‘We don’t see anything going on out there that’s going to slow us down.’ They’ve also been telling me that work has been coming back from overseas, and it’s the kind of work they haven’t seen in years.” Daniel O’Brien, vice-president of Marcon Custom Metals Inc., a Kitche...

History Underfoot: Flooring in the 19th Century Home

Editor’s note: This is an update of a series that ran in 2010. Read the originals here: Part 1 and Part 2. I like to go to open houses with friends who are looking to buy, or for myself, to satisfy my curiosity about places in my neighborhood that I’ve always wanted to see. And hey, you never know…..To me, the best old houses are the ones that no one has touched in years. The floors are covered in wall to wall carpeting of dubious antiquity, or layers upon layers of linoleum. The moment of truth arises when you can grab the end of the carpet, or lift up the linoleum and there they are, protected for umpteen years from wear and tear and the foibles of bad decor: parquet floors! Even better is going to a corner and catching sight of an ornate border, ringing the room, the different colored woods forming lines and patterns, artistry in wood. Love it! However, sometimes you can pull up the carpet, and there is nothing special there. A house with ornate woodwork, marble fireplaces, the works, and there you go an eh floor. What happened? Were the original owners cheap? Did someone tear out the floors? Why do some houses have such wonderful original floors, and others don’t? When did ...

MOX Nuclear Fuel Loaded in Russian Reactor, More to Come

Power plant engineers have loaded 18 mixed-oxide (MOX) fuel assemblies in Unit 4 at the Beloyarsk nuclear power plant in Sverdlovsk Oblast, Russia. Distinct from traditional nuclear fuel with enriched uranium, MOX fuel pellets are based on the mix of nuclear fuel cycle derivatives, such as plutonium oxide bred in commercial reactors and uranium oxide derived by defluorination of depleted uranium hexafluoride—the so-called secondary tailings of uranium enrichment facilities. Beloyarsk Unit 4 (Figure 1) is a BN-800 design, the world’s most powerful fast neutron reactor. It was a POWER Top Plant in 2016. Rosenergoatom and TVEL (the power generation and nuclear fuel divisions of Rosatom State Corp., respectively) plan to load another batch of 180 MOX fuel assemblies later this year. The group has committed to replacing all remaining uranium-based fuel assemblies with MOX fuel by the end of 2021. If completed as planned, it will be the first time a Russian fast neutron reactor operates with a full load of MOX fuel. “Rosatom strategy is aimed at the dual-component nuclear power system with both thermal neutron and fast neutron reactors, and closing nuclear fuel cycle, which would solv...

Camso-highlights-anti-shock-tire-properties-in-animated-video web web

MAGOG, Quebec—Camso Ltd. has released a tongue-in-cheek video to help educate the general public on static electricity hazards linked to non-marking forklift tires. For most of the world, static buildup is an invisible phenomenon, Camso said, but for those who work anywhere a forklift runs on non-marking tires, the potential for static shocks—up to 50,000 volts—is an ever-present hazard. Because non-marking tires use silica, an insulator, instead of carbon black in their compounds, static electricity generated is stored rather than dissipated, creating safety hazards, Camso said. Among the hazards are operator injury and safety issues; fires—static electricity can create sparks at high voltages; and facility damages — electric discharge can cause outages and circuit damage not only to the lift itself but to other components and equipment within the facility. “We wanted to take a lighter approach to address the serious issue of static buildup in non-marking tires,” Erick Bellefleur, vice president and general manager – material handling, said. “Of course, the reality in warehouses is not as severe as what we’ve pictured in the animation, but the world we&...

Civil servant status may shackle KPK employees – Mon, January 6 2020

Antigraft activists have raised doubts about the ability of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to maintain its independence once its employees become regular civil servants and as such, will be under government supervision.A controversial amendment to the KPK Law has stripped the law enforcement body of special authority and turned it into a government institution. The revised law, through articles 1, 24 and 69, also mandates a change of employment status from nongovernment employees to civil servants, emphasizing that all KPK employees must be given state civil service status no later than in 2021.Zaenur Rohman, a researcher of Gadjah Mada University’s Center for Anticorruption Studies (Pukat UGM), said the KPK would lose authority over its own manpower, as the recruitment process would be conducted by two government agencies, the Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform Ministr… Small Turnbuckle, Turnbuckle Hardware, Stainless Turnbuckle – Rui De Tai,https://www.qdruidetai.com/

Bike-based hot dog cart to roll into Charlottesville

Warren Teller and Casey Reynolds, of National Land Realty in Richmond, were grabbing a drink after work when the conversation turned to food. “[W]e were sitting out at a brewery, and we said, how cool would it be if someone rode up right now on a bike and sold us hot dogs?” Teller said. Over the July 4 holiday, Teller and Reynolds rolled out Scottdogs in Scott’s Addition, a former industrial area of Richmond that quickly is becoming the city’s most popular place to live, work and play. The next stop for their frankfurters is Charlottesville. “We looked at a lot of food bikes and all sorts of cargo bikes, [which] are extremely popular throughout the world, and that’s really where we started … looking at what’s going on in Brazil and Denmark and looking at their bikes,” Teller said. They settled on a large bike that has the warming box at its front. For their Charlottesville cart, Scottdogs is working on a trike with a smaller footprint that will tow the box and most likely a trailer, Teller said. The smaller size will be helpful in navigating spaces like the Downtown Mall and perhaps the area surrounding Scott Stadium on University of Virginia football game days, he said. Althoug...

Police fire tear gas to disperse thousands in central Hong Kong | News

HONG KONG (Reuters) – Police fired tear gas on Sunday to disperse thousands of anti-government protesters who gathered in a central Hong Kong park but later spilled onto the streets, briefly barricading roads and spray-painting buildings. Out in numbers before the demonstration began, police intervened promptly when the rally turned into an impromptu march. Several units of police in riot gear were seen chasing protesters and several arrests were made. Organizers initially applied for a permit for a march, but police only agreed to a static rally in the park, saying previous marches have turned violent. Once protesters spilled onto the streets, some of them, wearing all-black clothing, barricaded the roads with umbrellas and street furniture, dug up bricks from the pavement and smashed traffic lights. Police said in a statement two police community liaison officers were attacked with wooden sticks and sustained head injuries. They also said some protesters threw water bottles at some other officers who were conducting a ‘stop and search’ operation. “In view of the violent incidents, police officers have asked the organizer to halt the public meeting ̷...
