Binghamton University implements new tobacco-free ambassador program

BINGHAMTON (WBNG) — November is National Tobacco Awareness Month and has Binghamton University students campaigning with a new program to raise awareness about the dangers of smoking and vaping. The University’s Health Promotion and Prevention Services (HPPS) created this tobacco-free ambassador program and are recruiting volunteers to help enforce the tobacco-free rule on campus. Their 30 People Campaign’s aim is to educate the campus community about the tobacco-free policy that was implemented on BU’s campus in August 2017. The ambassadors can be anyone at Binghamton University, and will be trained on how to approach someone violating the tobacco-free policy. They will encourage the tobacco user to discard of their tobacco or nicotine device and offer them a card that highlights the resources offered on campus. One resource available to students is Nicotine Replacement Therapy. On Wednesday, Kimberly Peabody, Director of HPPS, and Chelsea Cleary, BU student and ambassador, said they are not the tobacco police and are not looking to get people in trouble, but instead, to help make the campus a healthier environment. “Instead of being punitive in nature, we wanted to provide res...

Home » Cars » Honda Civic hatchback facelift – sole 1.5 RS variant, Honda Sensing safety suite, RM168k in Thailand The Honda Civic hatchback facelift has arrived in Thailand, following the arrival of its facelifted sedan sibling earlier towards the end of last year. Launched in sole RS trim, this variant goes for 1.229 million baht (RM167,871) in the Land of Smiles, compared to 1,219,000 baht for the RS variant sedan. The facelifted five-door Civic features the company’s 1.5 litre turbocharged four-cylinder which produces 173 hp at 5,500 rpm and 220 Nm of torque between 1,700 rpm and 5,500 rpm – figures identical to those in the Civic sedan. Transmission also mirrors the sedan’s, where a CVT sends drive to the front wheels. As with the sedan, the Civic hatchback gets redesigned bumpers front and rear for this update, as well as gloss black accents for its front grille and bumper trim surrounds. Unique to the Civic hatchback is its central twin exhaust pipe configuration, which is mated with a black diffuser assembly beneath the rear bumper. Rolling stock is a set of 17-inch wheels shod in 215/50R17 tyres. Equipment-wise, the sole RS trim variant gets the Honda Sensing suite whic...

Chevron debuts new lower ash, DPF-friendly Delo diesel engine oil

Chevron on Tuesday announced the release of a new heavy-duty engine oil, a fluid which the company says extends the life of the engine’s Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and caps a development process that has spanned more than 15 years. Current heavy-duty engine oils are formulated up to the API CK-4 limit of 1% sulfated ash, but Chevron Oronite Additive Global Product Manager Teri Crosby said the new Delo 600 ADF is formulated to .4% sulfated ash, reducing the rate of DPF clogging by 60%. “The global appetite for high-quality base oils is going to continue to grow,” noted Kamala Krishna, manager of process research in downstream technology and services. “More recently we are more focused on areas of improved catalysis.” The DPF collects upwards of 98% of particulate matter emissions in the form of ash and soot. While the regeneration cycle combusts most of the soot from the DPF, ash is an incombustible material derived from metallic lubricant additives that clogs the DPF over time. “Ninety percent of the ash that goes into the DPF is from the lubricant,” said Keith Shaw, global manager, OEM technical services and approvals. The idea for what would become Delo 600 ADF first aro...

Get a six pack the fast but not so easy way: this is THE hardest abs, biceps and core exercise

There is a saying: abs are made in the gym and revealed in the kitchen, and we couldn’t agree more. You can bend over backwards and do all the crunches in the gym to get a six pack, but until you eat right, all your abs will be tucked away nicely under that tyre you call your abdominal area. People also say everyone have abs and this is also true, to some degree. There is a huge difference between abs and abs. Everyone has the former, it makes you able to sit up in bed. The latter, though, is pretty hard work to get and if you want abs fast, you’ll need to do the right exercises. Forget the ab crunch machine or that weird core-twist machine thing which looks like a torture device from the mid 1600s. Instead, try doing compound exercises that can be a part of a full body workout. These exercises use multiple muscles and are a great way to improve strength, build muscle and even to burn fat. For the best sixpack results, you want exercises where you can move naturally and more often than not, these exercises are the ones where you don’t need to use machines – although you will need something high enough off the ground to hang from with your feet off the ground.  ...

Choosing the best family pet for you and your children

Oscar Papandrea, 8, loves animals. In his bedroom, he looks after 20 snails and “Virgil van Dijk”, a fighting fish named after the centre-back who plays for Liverpool in the English Premier League. Mrs Brown likes to run over to greet Oscar when he gets home from school, and sneak into the house to snuggle on his bed. But, for parents, it can hard to know which pet to choose — or how much time and responsibility will be involved. Here’s some helpful advice on choosing the first pet for your children from Oscar’s mother Fiona and two vets. For Oscar’s mum Fiona — host of the Little Green Pod — the chickens have become valued and productive members of the family. “It’s great because the chickens eat our food waste, they provide eggs and we don’t need to compost — the chickens are our compost bin,” she says. Join host, and exhausted mum-of-two, Fi Poole, on her quest to find quick and easy ways to live a little greener. “They’re a really good choice for a pet. They don’t cost you any money really, they give you food, and the kids learn about the cycle of life as well, because chickens die.” Chickens have...

M&A soared in 2018; Autodesk, Hershey, Stryker closed notable deals

M&A was robust with in 2018, with deal activity in the U.S. middle market exceeding $400 billion in 2018, the first year to achieve the milestone, according to a report by PitchBook. Dealmakers closed 2,971 transactions in the middle market (defined by deals worth $1 billion and less) with a total deal value of $427.9 billion. The activity represents an increase of about 15 percent in both volume and value from the previous year. “A sustained market appetite for high-yield bonds and leveraged loans led to an easy financing environment in which dealmakers were able to attain attractive pricing for deal financing,” writes private equity analyst analyst Wylie Fernyhough. On a cautionary note looking forward, he points out that, “attitudes began to change in the fourth quarter, as the leveraged loan market—which has swollen in size since the financial crisis—saw downward swings in pricing.” Overall M&A thrived as well, with the aggregate value of announced global mergers and acquisitions reaching the highest level since 2015, according to information collected by Bureau van Dijk, a Moody’s Analyticscompany. Deal value increased 10 percent over the pre...

Smart three-dimensional lightweight structure triggered from a thin composite sheet via 3D printing technique

Thank you for visiting nature.com. You are using a browser version with limited support for CSS. To obtain the best experience, we recommend you use a more up to date browser (or turn off compatibility mode in Internet Explorer). In the meantime, to ensure continued support, we are displaying the site without styles and JavaScript. Complex fabrication process and expensive materials have restricted the development of smart three-dimensional (3D) lightweight structures, which are expected to possess self-shaping, self-folding and self-unfolding performances. Here we present a simple approach to fabricate smart lightweight structures by triggering shape transformation from thin printed composite sheets. The release of the internal strain in printed polymer materials enables the printed composite sheet to keep flat under heating and transform into a designed 3D configuration when cooled down to room temperature. The 3D lightweight structure can be switched between flat and 3D configuration under appropriate thermal stimuli. Our work exploits uniform internal strain in printed materials as a controllable tool to fabricate smart 3D lightweight structures, opening an avenue for possib...
